Brendan O'Brien arrived in Cape Town over twenty years ago. Like most people who stay that long, it stopped feeling like a destination and started feeling like home.

There was a period back in Ireland – delivering residential developments in a very different context, where density, durability and financial reality leave little room for indulgence. That chapter explains the gap in local projects. Not a pause in thinking – simply another environment in which to sharpen it.

Cape Town has a way of making "temporary" plans look naïve. Urban Space was never intended to be temporary.

From the outset, the business was shaped not only by development decisions, but by discipline behind the scenes. Emma Trilby Kane played a meaningful role in those early years – bringing order, structure and a steady hand to the day-to-day realities that allow thoughtful work to happen. Good development is visible. Good administration rarely is. Both matter.

Urban Space remains deliberately small, close to its projects, and accountable for its outcomes. The homes speak for themselves – but they are built on judgement, experience, and an attention to detail that borders on obsession.
